World's First Ammonia-Powered Tugboat
The NH3 Kraken is making waves in the maritime industry with its groundbreaking debut!
As the world’s first carbon-free ammonia-powered vessel, the NH3 Kraken recently embarked on its maiden voyage along an inland waterway in New York. This historic journey signals a pivotal step toward decarbonizing the industry, showcasing the potential of ammonia as a clean maritime fuel.
Originally built in 1957, the tugboat was initially powered by diesel generators and electric motors. It has now been retrofitted with Amogy’s innovative ammonia-to-electrical power system which emits zero carbon emissions.
The NH3 Kraken marks a significant milestone in the industry's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and power ahead toward the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The NH3 Kraken: A deeper meaning
Marking the moment on a journey that could transform the future of one of the world’s oldest industries, Amogy held a traditional renaming ceremony to officially welcome the first carbon-free, ammonia-powered vessel to the water.
The NH3 Kraken, which had operated under several other names since its initial launch in 1957, was christened with a time-honored ritual meant to ensure its safe passage and good fortune. The NH3 Kraken was named for Amogy’s innovative ammonia “cracking” technology.
BBC Storyworks Spotlights Amogy, NH3
Amogy’s pioneering retrofit of the NH3 Kraken was recently featured in the BBC’s “The Climate and Us” series. The piece detailed how our innovative cracking technology converts liquid ammonia into high-performance power with zero carbon, which has chartered a new course for the maritime industry.
